Context

ArianeGroup designs launch systems and space applications for institutional, commercial and industrial customers from 13 industrial sites in France, Germany and French Guiana. Through ArianeGroup Services it also operates industrial sites on behalf of their owners and keeps them in operational condition under long-term contracts. ArianeGroup Services set itself the objective of steering the heavy renovation and replacement tier of maintenance — the work that goes beyond routine upkeep — as something it could anticipate, cost and justify rather than absorb as it arose, with Oxand Simeo as the reference that planning is built on.

Our solution

  1. 01 Collect and structure Gather and structure the asset data of the operated sites into one consistent reference covering buildings and technical assets alike.
  2. 02 Digitise the estate Digitise the industrial buildings and their technical assets in Oxand Simeo, so the whole operated perimeter is held in one place.
  3. 03 Map wear and risk Map the state of wear and the level of risk of the assets so that priorities can be compared across the whole perimeter on the same basis.
  4. 04 Compare strategies as scenarios Write and compare maintenance strategies inside risk-prioritised multi-year investment plans that include the heavy renovation and replacement tier of maintenance.

What Oxand delivered

A central asset database

One central and extensible database that holds the asset data of the operated buildings, and keeps holding it as the estate and the contracts evolve.

Indicators that communicate

Objective indicators for discussing and arbitrating investment needs with the site owner and internally, instead of arguing each case from its own figures.

A defensible investment trajectory

A heavy maintenance and renewal trajectory that shows what has to be done, in what order, to hold the level of risk on the estate under control.

Visibility beyond the contract

Twenty years of visibility on investment needs, so commitments made inside one operating contract are read against their consequences after it.

Questions about this reference

What did ArianeGroup Services set out to do?

To be able to anticipate and steer the heavy renovation and replacement tier of maintenance on the industrial sites it operates. The objective was to plan, cost and justify investment needs on that tier rather than absorb them as they arose, with Oxand Simeo as the reference the planning is built on.

What is the heavy renovation and replacement tier of maintenance?

It is the level above routine upkeep and standard repairs: major renovation, reconstruction and replacement of physical assets. It is the tier that carries the largest sums and the longest lead times, which is why it needs a multi-year plan rather than an annual budget line.

Why plan over twenty years when an operating contract runs for a shorter term?

Because renovation and replacement decisions outlive the contract that pays for them. A twenty-year horizon shows what the current contract period commits the estate to afterwards, and lets the parties see which investments can be deferred without pushing risk into the next term.

How are investment priorities decided?

Every asset is rated for its state of wear and for the level of risk it carries, and the multi-year plans are prioritised on that risk rather than on the age of the asset alone. That is what makes the order of works explainable to the site owner.

What does ArianeGroup Services hold at the end of the engagement?

A central asset database, condition and risk mapping across the perimeter, shareable indicators for arbitrating investment needs, and a risk-prioritised heavy maintenance and renewal trajectory it can re-run when a constraint or a contract changes.
