Many organisations assume their CMMS data alone is enough to plan capital investment, but work-order history describes what already happened, not what an asset’s condition means for future risk and cost. Treating CMMS data as an investment-planning tool leads to reactive, age-based replacement decisions rather than risk-weighted, evidence-based ones. The two systems are complementary: CMMS data — repair frequency, downtime, cost per intervention — is one of the key inputs an AIP model needs, and the investment plan an AIP model produces should, in turn, inform CMMS work-order priorities.
